Karl and Helga Maglock worked this tiny vineyard for nearly 40 years; they poured the wine at their inn. Martin Arndorfer always expressed to the couple his admiration of the character of the wine. When they retired, they asked Martin if he would work this forest-vineyard. With old vines and nearly 17 terraced walls, this is no small effort. We have agreed to partner together to save this vineyard. Roughly 20 cases a year will be produced.
50% Riesling and 50% Welschriesling planted in 1976 and 1994 on this incredible terraced hillside vineyard surrounded by forests. Directly pressed, fermented and aged in stainless steel barrel for 10 months on the full lees—the steel is shaped like a barrique for more ideal lees contact—unfined, unfiltered and low sulfur addition only at bottling.
This is a quietly structured—but not simple—wine. Crushed stones, sweetly floral and incredible saturation. Very mineral and cool toned with a yeasty and reserved profile.
