Sourced from a parcel of ungrafted vines planted in 1934 this is perhaps one of the greatest Sylvaners on earth. As my esteemed colleague has written: “God wine.” Also one of the earliest pickings of the year, the wine is seamless, dense yet featherweight. This is one of those wines that references the natural world in such a total way that one falls back into grandiose, generic (yet meaningful and sincere!) sentiments, like “shimmering,” and “deep” and “alive.”
In 2019 this is absoltuely kalaidescopic. In many ways it’s the quintessential Vetter wine, light in weight but has a firm steadfast poise. Depth but lightness, the classic Vetter paradox. The nose is completely mineral, salt, rocks, pebbles, earth and flowers with a strong phenolic grip.
Eric Asimov included this wine as one of his most memorable bottles of 2018; check out the article here https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/07/dining/drinks/eric-asimov-favorite-wines.html
