The delicately named “Bellen” is sourced from a very steep vineyard that twists and bends into a side valley with a dramatic western exposition. It is perhaps the most finely knit of all the Wasenhaus Pinot Noirs, thread-count unknown but very, very high. It is the first wine from Wasenhaus that just floored me; I had never had a better German Pinot Noir. This Pinot shows a balance of power and restraint; it is, along with the Kanzel, the more finessed of the Wasenhaus Pinots.
The Bellen grows on limestone clay soils in Kirchhofen and Pfaffenweiler. Due to the steepness, the site simply must be worked completely by hand. The vines are French and German clones. Fermented 40% with whole clusters, with a bit of carbonic fermentation and then transferred to an open-vat for a classic fermentation with minimal punchdowns. The wine was aged in mainly used French oak barrels for about 16 months.
