It amuses me that while no one has any problem with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, or just about anything else from Germany, sparkling wines have yet to make any serious inroads, despite the fact they are often as good (if not better) than many Champagnes and come at a serious discount.

I guess the hundreds of billions of dollars Champagne has spent on marketing has, well, been well spent.

HOWEVER – for those curious in what other cold lands can shape with sparkles, this is one of the best bottles I’ve had from Germany.

The first edition of this wine was good; THIS SECOND VOLUME IS GREAT. The wine is 50% Chardonnay (and 50% Weissburgunder, all sourced from steep sites in the Mosel. The Chardonnay grapes came from the vineyard Briedeler Herzchen in Briedel (west facing vineyard with grey slate). The Weißburgunder is from the Wolfer Goldgrube, where one of his two Kabinetts comes from.

The wine is Brut Natur. “Tschiel” volume 2 is 2019 Chardonnay and 2018 Weissburgunder (the previous one was all 2018 fruit), so this is MUCH more cut. I told Moritz we’d take EVERYTHING we could get; to me this is the wine that can knock down walls and transcend the category. He only had about twenty cases for us. Wah womp. Grab this while you can!

The Tschiel *, as it is referred to on the consumer label (a play of words on the Romansh word for earth and chilling), with Lot Number 10/21 is a blend of 2018er Chardonnay from the Briedeler Herzchen sourced from a befriended grower and 2019er Weissburgunder from the Wolfer Goldgrube. It was refermented in bottle for 18 months before being disgorged without any dosage in February 2022 (the disgorgement date is provided on the label). It offers a beautiful and complex nose of brioche, whipped almond cream, Conference pear, candied orange, and fine spices. The wine is creamy and spicy on the palate with some riper notes of toffee, muscade, hazelnut, and pear. The finish is superbly long and intense, and also slightly broader in style. This is a superb sparkling wine.
