Special note should be made of the new addition to the Kabinett lineup, the Treppchen “vorm Berg.” This is a small, two-hectare site just behind the estate (if memory serves). Max is now farming a whopping 3,000 square meters (about a third of a hectare) of old ungrafted vines here. I thought the wine was superb… like shockingly good – tense, agile. Do not miss this new bottling.

Mosel Fine Wines | The 2023er Treppchen vorm Berg Riesling Kabinett, as it is referred to on the consumer label, was made from fruit picked at 78° Oechsle on 80- year-old vines in this steep sector of the vineyard situation next to the Ohligsberg and was fermented spontaneously in stainless-steel tank down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (53 g/l). This hay-white-colored wine offers a subtly backward nose made of spices, smoke, pear, starfruit, orange peel, citrusy elements, and fine herbs. It is nicely playful, focused, and packed with beautiful mineral and fruity flavors on the palate and leaves a juicy feel of pear puree and lime sorbet in the long finish. | No 74 Dec 2024 |
