The Goldtröpfchen is the warmer vineyard, yet somehow the wine presents more linear (these basic notes as per Ohligsberg and Goldtröpfchen hold true with the expressions of Julian Haart as well, which is fascinating) – the tones here are a bit brighter and stone-fruited; it is also characteristically spiced and herbal, simply piercing and lithe. Welcome to Bonkers-town.

Mosel Fine Wines | The 2023er Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett, as it is referred to on the consumer label, was made from fruit picked at 79° Oechsle on up to 30-year- old vines in the Niederemmel part of the vineyard and was fermented spontaneously in stainless-steel tank down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (52 g/l). This hay-white-colored wine offers a reduced nose of smoke, barbecue herbs, passion fruit puree, bergamot, lemon zest, and whipped cream. It is nicely juicy and playful on the palate, where ripe elements of pear are lifted by firm tart zest and minerals. The finish is intense, subtly creamy, and yet firmly zesty. The aftertaste is still quite tart at this early stage. This beautiful Kabinett needs a decade of bottle aging to reveal its full potential. | No 74 Dec 2024 |
