This is a blend of 60% Chardonnay with 40% Elbling, and to some extent, this is what the wine tastes like. It has the stoney, essential quality, the punch of Elbling with a bit more of the glossy, quinine-like fruit of Chardonnay – a bit, but not much, of the curves of Chardonnay. It does have an elegance that the sharper edges of the Elbling miss. It is profoundly mineral and does have more than a subtle hint of “pure dolomite.”

Mosel Fine Wines | The 2022er Pure Dolomite (with L-Nr. 3-23) was made from 60% of Chardonnay and 40% of Elbling, which underwent around 15% mash fermentation for 6 days, and was fermented and aged in 228-liter used oak barrels along natural lines, i.e. without any intervention and was bottled unfiltered and with little SO2 added (30 mg/l). The color is already golden with a slight turbidity, the nose is immediately captivating with its very primary and pure side, very floral (especially lily flower, rose petal), candied lemon, sweet spices, thyme, hay, hazelnut butter, and a hint of honey. The wine is light and almost airy on the palate, blending a suave side of yellow fruits with the freshness of spices and zest. The finish has false aspects of lightness, as it is indeed airy, fully dry, and incredibly refined and of superb length, without any power. This is a remarkable wine. | No 71 June 2023 |
