Dostert’s Elblings are sharp, with the contrast unapologetically turned way up. This is a raw, essential wine: lemon water, salt, dissolved sweet tarts, lemon zest, pulverized chalk. The élevage here is evident, beautifully done, the neutral wood tones framing the punch of the citrus well, adding not exactly finesse, but some roundness – providing a few polished edges to a very incisive wine. This is a thrilling, if particular, wine. Fans of Vetter or de Moor will love this; people who do not like acidity will not like this.

This cuvee is sourced exclusively from young vines, mostly planted in 2014 in and around Nittel, on solid Kimmeridgean limestone. As with most of Dostert’s wines, it was whole-cluster pressed and fermented in neutral barrels. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur.

The 2022er Elbling (with L-Nr. 2-23) is made from fruit harvested on young vines and left in contact with the skin for four days and was fermented and aged in 228-liter used oak barrels along natural lines, i.e. without any intervention and was bottled unfiltered and with little SO2 added (30 mg/l). Slightly bright gold in color, the nose is initially rather shy and needs a few minutes of airing before revealing smoky notes of lime, candied citrus, hay, almond milk, chestnut, black tea, stone fruits, and violet. The wine has an intense zesty attack on the palate and shows a linear, almost sharp profile. The finish is very pure and straightforward, with plenty of zest, spices, and a hint of salinity. It is bone-dry and racy. This Elbling is not only refreshing, but it also has excellent complexity and will ideally need a year or two to fully express itself.
