Bacchus Kabinett Trocken.
Yes, you’ll be forgiven for questioning our sanity and/or integrity when you first saw this. But stick with us here, as we too were “love-to-hate it,” now reformed believers.
Bacchus, an overplanted, bizarro and maligned hybrid created in the 1930’s (yikes Riesling x Sylvaner x Muller-Thürgau) , ripens earlier with high must weights and low acidity. It can be overwrought, almost Sauvignon Blanc-like with its over-the-top fragrant personality and oftentimes flairs of pyrazine.
Yet this is the first-ever import of 100% Bacchus in the history of vom Boden. It better be damn good.
Leipold’s Bacchus Kabinett Trocken is so German it’s cute. Sometimes simplicity with a wine, not trying to masquerade or follow fads, is what’s called for – a certain honesty and rusticity so omnipresent it can be soul stirring. Firmly dry, with flashes of melons and cut wet grass and some greener anise on the nose, the wine reads decidedly light on the palate and refreshing with its clean and no-makeup body.
Here we have *just* the right amount of Bacchus with a nervy undercurrent to clean everything up and leave it refreshing.
One sip and the wine takes you to the old villages of Franconia, stone-walled and red-roofed. Isn’t this what wine is all about? A place, a time and a culture distilled into liquid form?
