Please note the wines featured in this offer are sold out.
I took one of my best friends to Becker’s – an artist/videographer whom I’ve known forever – and he put together what I think is simply a beautiful movie, just a bit over five minutes long. Click the image above to watch the movie. You’ll go into the tasting room with Hans-Joseph Becker, through the vineyards and down into one of the greatest cellars in Germany.
A cellar that will come to an end. I remember receiving offerings of back-vintage Lopez de Heredia, of decades-old Karthäuserhof… it always seemed like the offers would never end. And then they did.
I want to sell the wines, obviously. But I also want to show people who Hans-Joseph is, what the estate is about.
Because Hans-Joseph Becker is one of the most engimatic and misunderstood winemakers in Germany.
For exactly forty-five years he has been crafting nervous, angular, structured, DRY Rheingau Rieslings. The majority of this time, the wines have been misunderstood and all but ignored.
Becker is the Verset of the Rheingau: He has been crafting wines that demand age, wines that eschew fruit and voluptuousness for something more primal, something more raw, more essential. Time reveals something profound within the wines, but still the experience has more to do with rocks and with earth than with anything else.
The wines are revelations; there is simply nothing else like them in Germany.
