To celebrate the final day of Felbling – a Leapbling year as it was – we wanted to get serious for a moment and offer out one of the most sacred and meaningful bottles of wine we import: Matthias Hild’s old-vine, terraced-vineyard Elbling called “Zehnkommanull.”
Literally, this translates to “ten comma zero,” a reference to the fact that the wine, while bone dry, never has an alcohol higher than ten percent. Matthias and Jonas Hild farm one-fifteenth of a hectare of terraced vineyards of old-vine Elbling, the oldest of which are in their 70s. The vineyard was planted by Matthias’ grandfather and father.
This is likely the greatest Elbling on planet earth and it can be had for the princely sum of between $20-$25 a bottle retail. While we may have some insight into a few available bottles of 2018 (email us at orders@vomboden.com if you want to know how to get one), the 2019 won’t be bottled till April, with a May arrival. That said, we are giddy with Elbling this time of year and wanted to just make sure this wine goes to the right homes.
The “Zehnkommanull” is an ultra-light white, a quivering, angelic, porcelain wine with glossy, razor-sharp edges and a laser-beam lemon-skin citrus. I sometimes think of Elbling as the Muscadet of the Moselle. That said, the structure, the saturating acidity, the tapering finesse of the Zehnkommanull showcases its relation to that “other” grape of the Mosel, Riesling.
Please give us your maximum order and we’ll allocate as best we can. When the wine arrives in May we will let you know! You may not hear back from us until tomorrow, so please be patient.
This is one of the great stories of wine; of cultural preservation as winemaking, and vice-versa. Matthias Hild lives only 11.87 miles from Egon Müller and the fact that we go from the most expensive of German wines to among the most affordable in such a small stretch, from fame to absolute anonymity, is a fascinating story. If you haven’t already read it, please read our journal “Obermosel: no story is told, until someone tells it” by clicking here or the picture above.
See you next Felbling!
