Twenty four years ago, in 1992, Camelot collapsed: Prince Charles and Princess Diana separated.
On the other hand, the FDA put its profound might behind stopping the use of silicone breast implants. So that’s good.
In 1992, trade was a big issue: NAFTA was being debated and, eventually, signed. Turns out in 1992 the Middle East was a bit of a hot-spot. This dude Saddam Hussein was all about hampering U.N. weapons inspectors and a no-fly zone was setup in Libya. On the bright side, the Communist regime in Afghanistan was overthrown, ushering in an era of peace… right?
We had, 24 years ago last month, just elected a Clinton president.
And while all this was going on, Florian Lauer’s father, Peter, was harvesting the 1992 vintage. It was a good vintage, a bit lean and so the acids were technicolor… invigorating. It would prove to be a great vintage for the sparkling wines of the region, which, 100 years previously, were among the most famous in the world. But, it was agreed – the wine is going to need some time.
Fast forward two-and-a-half decades and we have the first release of this 1992 Sekt. This is a 100% Riesling cuvee, totally dry, made methode Champenois, hand-riddled and aged on the lees for over two decades. The parcel on offer today was disgorged only a few months ago (June 2016) and has only recently left the cellar for the first time. This is a zero-dosage wine – the first Lauer has released – and as such it’s a chiseled wine.
There is a citrus, stone-fruit undercurrent, little flashes of lemon and lime pointing toward Riesling, but really, it’s the most complex, cerebral Sekt release from Lauer with a wild array of herbs and spices, from dark tobacco to sweet peas, cilantro and dill and beyond. The minerality is, as you’d expect from Saar Riesling, brilliant.
And while most German wines today are ridiculous deals, this bottle has to win some kind of stupid-value award. Top producer, top site, aged for a near quarter-century with a perfect provenance and it will retail at about the cost of a good NV Champagne from a good producer, about $70.
This bottle, direct from Lauer’s cellar, is in stock NOW and ready to ship. If you are interested in ordering this PLEASE REPLY TO THIS EMAIL and let us know how many bottles you would want.
